MDDs have had a lot of problems with fan noise, mostly the power supply
fan.  Apple provided a low-cost ($20) power supply swap, but that program
expired at the end of June.  You could contact Apple and/or your local
Apple retailer--there might still be some available.

There were also some aftermarket "noise abatement" kits for MDDs, of
varying utility.  The best (and most expensive) I recall seeing was one
made by Verax <URL:http://www.verax.de/>.
