I did not remove my PCI USB card before I started. After I saw the message, I removed it, thinking it might be the problem, but it wasn't. I left it out anyway. The other PCI card is the SCSI card, which I need for the SCSI hard drive. I obviously left it in.
After a good deal of Googling late last night, I found that this particular SCSI card must be updated in order to install OSX on this machine. I also found some information that suggested all the memory should be Apple branded memory (mine isn't, and had 3 different sticks in it). I took out two of the sticks, leaving one 128mb stick in. This same site said that if the installation fails like mine did, you should zap the PRAM a couple of times. I did all of this, and installed my OS 9.1 CD, and was able to boot from the CD. I then initialized the drive, and reinstalled 9.1. The G3 would then boot from the hard drive, although it briefly displayed a message about not finding a mountable HFS volume. I got on-line again, downloaded the SCSI update, and installed it. Feeling very brave again, I started the OSX installation. It had completed the first CD and asked for the second CD just before I went to bed. I checked this morning, and it had completed, and was waiting for me to fill out registration info. I got through part of this, but had to leave for work before I could complete it. At this point, it seems like it's OK, but I'm anxious to see it restart. If it restarts OK, I'll put the rest of the memory back in, and see what happens. If that goes well, I'll reinstall the USB card. I'll post the results either way. Thank for your help.
