If so what happens to printing from
fully X applications like Word for X?

Guess what? I can't print any old documents from Word X. Microsoft says that all I have to do is start all my documents from scratch--that's all--then it will work fine.

So I have to use Word '98 or 2000 in classic mode. The more I do so, the more I wonder why I have Word X at all.

You might note that for some things (like printing multiple documents) you also have to start Photoshop in classic to print, because the OSX postscript driver is such a piece of garbage.
