How long are you waiting for the X CD to load?  My monitor (21" AppleVision)
won't even come on
for ages when trying to boot any X disks, then out of the clear blue everything
starts up.  I too am using
a G3/233 DT, and G3/233 MT.  Remember that our G3's are pushing the limit to
even run X.  Try
booting again from the X CD, put a paper weight on the "C" key, and leave the
room for another project.
It sounds like your monitor has issues when there is no signal from the
computer, but that it is not broken.
