Sorry for the stupid question but I keep on hearing people talk about the dreaded "KERNAL PANIC" but I don't seeing anyone explaining what it actually is.
It's the OSX equivalent to the OS 9 Sytem Bomb or Window's BSOD. A program has overwritten memory it wasn't supposed to and to prevent further system corruption the OS stops the system immediately.
I have had a lot of strange things happen on my beige and iBook but I don't know if I could claim the "KERNAL PANIC".
Can someone explain the symptoms or the event?
Under OS 10.1.5 and lower, a Kernel Panic (note spelling) was evident by the system beeping at you and the GUI being covered with scroilling lines of console-ish text. (in fact it is *the* Console, the part of the OS that is hidden beneath the Aqua GUI, if you want to see it in action, boot in verbose mode. (I believe it's command-V on boot) I believe it says Kernel Panic in many places in the text.
Under OSX it was somewhat more graceful. You entire screen dims and a multilingual message to retart your computer comes on the screen...it's beenn quite a while since I've seen this. Heck it's been quite a while since I've seen any Kernel Panic at all.
Most often these are caused by hardware or driver issues, hence they most often occur after some new hardware has been installed.
More rarely they're caused by the System, applications are not supposed to be able to do this, though I've seen it from them as well.
