Assuming you want the DVD burner for a desktop you do have a good range of options at competitive prices. For the best advice and help out there, I'd say bar none, turn to www.xlr8yourmac.com. Mike, the writer there has collected an enormous amount of incredibly precise and knowledgeable help and clarification pages and he includes a database about people's experiences with their drives under various systems, various machines, etc. Go to: http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/drivedb/search.drivedb.lasso
I also generally check in at www.dealmac.com and do a search on any hardware I want to buy, looking also in the archives to make sure I gain an understanding of what's out there. That's also where I read about www.esbuy.com quite a bit (I think they sponsored ads on dealmac) and finally, because of price AND trust, that is where I bought my Pioneer DVR-106 recently. With the update to 10.2.8, my G4 now fully supports the drive, meaning I can use all the software that apple initially confined to users with a "superdrive" such as buring with iTunes, buring pix from iphoto and above all to be highly recommended, burning DVD's with iDVD 3. I'm not sure what other drives are fully supported, but I remember reading recently that a new Sony drive (I think) got good marks from testing (MacWorld ? ? xlr8yourmac??)
