James,

What OS is receommended for this system? It has 8.1 installed. I have OS
8.5, 9.2.2 and 10.1 available. Are these good choices for the AIO? If not,
what would be better? Does any version of OSX run acceptably on these
machines provided there is enough memory installed?

I think the proper response is: what OS do you need to use. Any of the above versions will install on the AIO, though you might run into problems with OS X (as many list members will attest to). The amount of RAM you have now (160MB) is enough for 8.x and even 9.x, but you'll definitely want to add more if you install X.

What does adding VRAM accomplish? I know it will let me go to more colors
and higher resolution. If I stick with fewer colors and lower resolution
will it speed up the video any?

Some, but not much and only really in 3D/games. It won't make any difference speed-wise to 10.1, though. If you want speedier graphics, get a PCI card. The Radeon Mac Edition PCI with 32MB is a great card, the Radeon 7000 would be a good second choice, and if you don't care about games too much an older Rage 128 can be had for $50 or less.

400 MHz G3 ZIF chips seem pretty easy (and inexpensive) to come by. Is the
step up from 233MHz to 400 MHz worth it? There seems to be a big price jump
if you go above 400 MHz ZIF chips.

You'll notice a definite difference in speed and responsiveness with the 400. Heck, you'd probably notice a difference with a 300MHz G3. If you don't mind going used, you can probably ebay a 400 for around $70-100 and a 500 for around $120-150 (possibly less if you're patient).

Does anybody have experience installing PC compatibility boards in an AIO? I
have an OrangePC 626 PPC copmpatibility card.

No experience with using one, other than I think you have to reboot the computer into the Windows or Linux OS. They also require their own RAM. I've always heard they're rather slow. If you really need a PC compatible system, just buy a used one. Even a PIII 450 would probably be faster than this card, and you might be able to pick one up for less than $100.

Have I used up my allocation of questions?

Ask away, someone will answer.
