Did you try compacting or rebuilding your mail database? If you hold the
option key down while starting OE, you will get the option to do so. The
following is from Microsoft's web site.

5.

from the database, data that is corrupted is removed and links are broken .
If you click No , a rebuild of the database is not done. 

This also works with Entourage.
