Mike:
Without getting technical--because I haven't done the math, I will just say that a putting a G4 in my beige machine was great because it made it really solid feeling, but I got mine for $98 and that was 1.2 years ago or so. But this machine is nowhere near the speed of my cube, which is, in turn, slower than a 450 sawtooth. So take Bruce at his word.

The key here is money. If you said you had a G4 for $90, I'd say go for it. But you've reached the end of the beige's expandability.

Mike says: To me, it seems that a slower 66 Mhz is less relevant to system
performance with an ATA card installed. How can a fast ATA card
and fast processor *not* be helpful?

Listen to Bruce again. Without my doing any math, it is apparent to me, that my new drives swamp the bus of the Beige--because they are not as fast on the beiges as they are on other machines.

Mike says: If I part out my Beige, I'll likely get $150 tops. I paid $1,800
for it over 5 1/2 years ago

Your computer is fully amortized--don't look back. Don't part out anything but the video and the dual port card. Keep your beige for its floppy and zip drives and as a backup machine (for running old software and opening old documents) and as a backup server (and also so you can play warcraft II with 2 machines).

Mike says:
A G4 box is going to run $450-$500. It would cost me about $700-$800 minimum to make my own
*decent* G4 box.

eBay auctions for Sawtooths machines are running $400 to $600 and these almost all have substantial upgrades. Some with SCSI cards, some with lots of RAM--some with software (for demonstration purposes only).

Mike says:
For about $400, I can get a G4/700 and bootable SIIG or Sonnet card, and most of the speed issues are solved right there...

Based upon my experience I believe that that is not true.

Mike says: I marvel at the expansion of the beige machine. It has limits, but it's been a
good soldier for me.

I do too---that's why I have 2 of them.
