Parity RAM, from an IBM server.

There are two voltage levels (3.3 volts and 5 volts) and two functions 
(SDRAM and cache) for 168-pin sticks.

SDRAM comes in non-parity (standard for the Beige), parity, and ECC.

Unfortunately, the "keys" are such that incorrect sticks can be forced 
into a Beige ... awkwardly, just as you said.
