well, I finally made the move to X with Panther. I very much like the system and I can't wait to get it all straightened out, but...

very shortly after I loaded it all up (possibly following the security update install) I started having big trouble with my 80GB WD Caviar SE mounted to the on-board ATA of my Yosemite 350. the SCSI disk running the system was fine, but the ATA partitions kept disappearing intermittently. everything showed fine in 9.2.2, so I hadn't actually lost any data. Disk Utility was able to mount them occasionally, but that usually required hitting the mount button dozens of times (going in and out of the app, selecting other disks and coming back to the disk in question -- for no particular reason).

So after a good deal of searching around for answers, I ended up wiping the whole thing and repartitioning. the disks are now mounted reliably and seem to work well for the most part. the trouble is, when accessing one particular folder (the only one I _need_ right now, of course) the Finder locks up and the only way to get a response is with a hard restart. I booted into OS 9 and had no trouble, so I copied the folder over to one of my SCSI partitions. when booted back into Panther, I was able to access the folder on the SCSI so I copied it to the ATA hoping to overwrite the bad files. I received an error when overwriting, so I dumped the problem folder and copied from the SCSI. once on the ATA, the folder started causing the same trouble again.

when I check the ATA disk in Disk Utility it finds no problems. can anyone offer some advice? would a PCI controller card put an end to this madness, or would I just be introducing a new variable? I'm losing money by the day messing around with this crap! you have my utmost thanks just for reading this far -- I need to vent.
