I think what he means is, where are the alias' to the programs and files stored on the hard drive. In OS 9 you could find the Recent Items folder in the System Folder and manually manipulate what was in there. I think he wants to know where those files' alias' are physically located.

In OS X it's under the "Blue Apple". Actually has more options than 'recent items" in OS 9.
