Plug it into the hub, the link light should go on. If it did, then you're done with this step. If it didn't, then either move where you've plugged it into the UPLINK port -or- press the little UPLINK/NORMAL button. Link light on now, right? So, now you've got a cable modem connected to a hub. Great, right? Well, kinda. Turn off the cable modem. Turn it on. It no longer remembers what MAC address (every network item has a unique one to help in tracking) it was linked too. Thi smeans that the first device, PC or Mac, that makes itself known to the cable modem is the one that gets to use it. The other computer? It just sits there and consumes energy. If you need to use the other one on the internet, restart cable modem then ensure the other one gets to be the one the cable modem sees first. WEll, you're halfway to where you wanted to be. You want to use them both. You need to either get crafty or you need to come up with another piece of equipment. You can find a router or you can make one. To make one you need two ethernet cards, one plugs into the cable modem, one into the hub. The computer that does this then needs to share the internet connection, ie through ICS on the PC (which I'm assuming is a Windows based machine) or through whatever its called on the Mac. Of course, that means the "router" PC needs to always be on. Your other option is to purchase a "router" from somewhere and use that. A router is like what you would've built with the the computer-as-router, but its small and does only that job. You can get a Linksys or Dlink router for cheap, you plug your cable modem in the WAN port, you plug the hub into the LAN port on it, and yous et it up according to its instructions.
