Well, so much for that... I contacted Extensis (the Font Reserve folks) who have informed me that Font Reserve is not compatible with Panther, and "nobody knows when an update will be ready." The problem was that FR had "permanently activated" ALL of my font libraries (about 2000 fonts), which was gobbling memory and taking forever to startup. Using FR's System Font Handler (File menu), I was able to deactivate and move all my fonts away to a safe distance, leaving only the essential System fonts in place. Voila... The machine now starts up to the Finder quite promptly, indeed.
