Here are a few questions to help you get this addressed.

What is the iMac model?
What system did you install?
Did you try holding down the option key during startup?

Also try resetting the pram (battery removal may have worked) restart with (command, option, p and r)
Listen for the chord about three times.

I just picked up an iMac with out a CD Drive. It has a 4 gig hard drive
in it, but the hard drive was blank (no system on it), so I put it into
my beige G3 and put a system on it.

I than put the hard drive back in to the iMac, but it does not reconize
the drive. I removed the battery for a while to see if that helps. Does
any one have any other ideas? I am also looking for a keyboard and CD drive.
