Kevin,

I went through this same quandary about replacing the CD-RW in my G4. At
first I wanted any DVD recording drive, then I wanted OEM apple so that I
could use iDVD, etc.

What I found out is that the Superdrive in the MDD Macs was a Pioneer 103.
Did some research, and also found out that OS X thinks any Pioneer drive
above a 103 is a Mac installed Superdrive. Check the ASP report snip below

ATA-3 Bus:

PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D:

  Manufacturer: PIONEER
  Model: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D
  Revision: 1.07
  Serial Number: CLDC432433WL
  Drive Type: CD-RW/DVD-RW
  Disc Burning: Apple Supported/Shipped
  Removable Media: Yes
  Detachable Drive: No
  Protocol: ATAPI
  Unit Number: 0
  Socket Type: Internal

Very simple to replace the drive, about 10 minutes.

Listed below are a few links for the Pioneer 106D bulk drive (this is the
model shown installed from the ASP report)

There is also a couple of links for the new 107D which is an 8X dual format
drive.
