I had this very same problem with a G4 Sawtooth until around a week
ago when I removed the mobo to take the internal modem out - had to take
it out as the modem wire was taped to the case under it. I also looked
for support from the apple site but there was nothing relating to this
particular problem.
Now the problem has gone away and it sleeps as it should - but I
don't know what caused it or cured it - perhaps a cuda reset will cure it
(as I also had a power cut around the same time and when it was restored
the date was 1906 on the G4) - or a vvram/pram reset.
