#1) I have a US Robotics 802.11g wireless router/firewall/hub (which I
love, much better than the POS SMC Barricade router it replaced). I need a
wireless card for this QS that will work, preferrably an 802.11g. What are
you guys using? I wish USR had one, then I'd get 100Mbs for transferring
files and such back and fourth to the fileserver.
An airport card will work, but that's only 11 MBPS, The router ought to have at least one hardwired prot...you could always <gasp> use that ancient, steam-powered technology called 'ethernet' ;-P Sonnet sells the Aria Extreme, a PCI 802.11G card <http://sonnettech.com/product/aria_pci.html>
#2) Also, how do I setup this Mac to share files and a printer on my
existing Windows 2000 network (workgroup only, no domain name server)? Do I
need something for both the Mac and the PC's if I want/need to share both
directions? I would only be transferring files to/from the PC's, but the QS
will have a printer attached that they will print to...if I can do that.
Under OSX, you can see and share to Windows networks with no problems; I do it every day.
In the Finder, select Go > Connect to server type in smb://<machine ip name or address> and you'll get a list of Windows shares. In the Control Panel, go to Sharing, and turn on Windows File sharing to let PC's see your computer.
#3) Is there a recommended upgrade for the Video Card? Something under
$400? Or would you spend money on adding to the existing 640MB of RAM?
I'd probably upgrade the RAM before the video.
#4) What's the best HTML editor for the Mac? I don't really care if it's
WSIWYG, or not, I prefer to hand code it all anyway. Currently I use
HomeSite on my PC's.
I like BBEdit.
#5) Is there a built-in email program with OSX? If so, does it do IMAP?
Oh yeah! The program, called Mail, rocks. Works really well with imap, I do so all day long.
