My name is Robert and I am new to this list.
Welcome to da list!
I was recently given a Beige G3 Mini Tower. It did not have a hard drive installed. With the computer came a Seagate IDE 20 gig HD which I plan to install and initialize. I have never had a HD so large although it is modest by contemporary standards. I plan to install OS 9. I think I should partition the hard drive but I am not sure how many partitions to install.
OS 9 itself is small. It plus the swap file, plus printer spool files, plus most apps, will fit nicely on a 2 GB partition.
Partitioning, in general, is not really necessary. Given your config, the only real advantage is separation of OS and user data (IOW 2 partitions) -- if an application spazzes, it won't take out the whole file system.
So what do I do with a Hard Drive that looks as big as North America to me?
Data is like gas - it expands to fill all available space. :)
Also, is there a reset button on the mother board?
Yes, it's called a CUDA. Essentially it's the reset for the power manager chip, not the whole mb.
I understand that if one is there, that it should be pressed when ever changes are made in hardware on the machine.
Not true, ever. Only reset the power manager after you've had a serious power system failure -- inability to boot, PRAM battery draining in days instead of years, etc.
The front plates of the devise bays are missing so the machine looks a little like Frankenstein.
eBay or the Lowendmac Swap list. :)
