This is a bug introduced in Jaguar (Mac OS X 10.2).
AFAIK, it was on the initially 10.2 CDs but was fixed by downloadable patch and on CDs shipped in late '02. And it is not a problem with Panther (Mac OS X 10.3). Can anyone confirm this?
AFAIK it's not a bug with OS X but a limitation of the boot hardware. It does go away with Panther (officially) as the problem only exists on machines which don't run Panther (officially).
