Check the battery, it may have gone dead. A simple test is to start the computer give it a second then give it the three fingered salute (Control-Apple-Power). Okay, this didn't work, the computer still would not boot. But I also rushed
Wade's suggestion a bit just to see what would happen resetting the PRAM.
Now the computer will boot from the CD (OS8.5), but not the HD. Running
Drive Setup I can see the HD, but it says it's not mounted. Tried to mount
it but is says I cannot mount that volume. Now what?

Once you are booted on the CD run Disk Utility and see if your can repair the disk. How was the disk formated? Could you have blown the boot track?
