You can erase the drive and put OS 9 on that Mac with no problem. Simply boot to the CD and have at it. Erase the drive with Drive Setup before doing the install. Drive Setup is in the Utilities folder if memory serves.

If she wants to keep Panther then she'll need OS 9 for "Classic." I've run 10.1 and 10.2 on an iMac 233 and it does hesitate a bit, but it's workable (if you don't have anything to compare it to for speed). The key is to max out the RAM. I hot-rodded my wife's iMac 233. I took the 32 MB RAM chip from the bottom RAM slot (supposedly not user accessible, but it can be done) and put a 64 in it. Then popped a 256 in the top slot and ended up with 320; and it recognized all of it. If you need any info on this email me off list. The more RAM the better in her case.

What has to be done to blow away panther and go back to an older version of
the OS? I mean sometimes older versions of some OS's (that start with "w")
won't recognize or wipe out the partition that the newer version is
installed on. So you have to start an installation with the new OS, blow
away the partition, then shut it down and start the installation with the
older OS. Would I have to do all of this or is there a better/easier way?
I think she really wants panther, but I'll ask to make sure.
