I love Menumeters, also freeware. It tells me everything my computer is doing in whatever detail is necessary. I often check the % of activity of the cpu which displayed at a glance in the menubar. Details if you click on the menu. I find the read-write meter also very useful. Sometimes you'd think nothing was going on, but this assures that the background process you set up in iDVD or something is chugging away. Much more convenient than anything else I've seen.
