Os 9 doesn't care where it is on the drive but X does.  If you think you might
want to try osx without making big changes in your drive, make your first
partition 9 gigs (8 is required for x but it pays to make it bigger just in case
the installer feels short changed) and use it for things you can move out to
clear the space for X.  Or make it that big, use it for 9 and copy the system
stuff out (or use your backup 9) when necessary to clear the partion for
installing X. 

This does not apply to drives on an ATA card that makes the system think it is
looking as scsi.

There is no real problem sharing a partition with X and 9.  I have my primary
Panther and 9 systems on the same unpartitioned drive. 

I hope my thinking is clear on this.
