When the Mac chimes it means it has checked to see that needed subsystems are present. Does not mean they are working correctly simply that they are present. If there has been no default system chosen and while it seems odd in this day and age a Desktop Beige G3's default boot device remains a floppy, and it might be worthwhile to try that. The boot disk images are on the 8.1 and 8.5 install CDs. Also if no default system is present it will try to boot from a SCSI device if present.
