And, that at least the RAM sticks are good (if the RAM check option wasn't turned off on the Memory control panel). Every Mac seems to have a unique "bad RAM" chime. The "original" G3 server ... not the one most folks know, which was derived from the Beige MT ... has part of a Beethoven symphony for its chimes. >If there has been no default system chosen and while it seems odd in >this day and age a Desktop Beige G3's default boot device remains a >floppy, and it might be worthwhile to try that. True enough. It is possible to get the PRAM farkled up so that no matter what you try nothing will boot. In this case, a good recovery technique is to insert a floppy which has just a system file and finder ... it doesn't even have to be for the specific Mac model just so it is a valid system and finder ... the floppy boot will be attempted, but it will fail, and immediately thereafter the hard disk will be booted from. Subsequent boots will be attempted from the hard drive, not the floppy. Recalcitrant Beiges can benefit from keyboard-type PRAM resets ... about ten in a row. Failed installs of OS X on a Beige often results in one or both EIDE controllers being farkled up, thereby preventing a boot from the hard drive (EIDE Bus 0) and/or the CR-ROM (EIDE Bus 1). -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
