DiskWarrior does one thing: rebuild munged disk directories, and does it really, really well.
And when even DiskWarrior won't work (I tried it on the last two hard drive crashes - first one it'd rebuild the directories just fine, but wouldn't recover any of my files inside the directories, second one it wouldn't even see my drive), Data Rescue X is a lifesaver. First crash it got nearly everything back, except some mauled mp3s, second crash I had to put the hard drive in a firewire enclosure before it'd get recognized by another system, and though it didn't find the directory structure like it had the first time, it still found the files, even if they were mostly in the "orphans" directories.
And yes, I finally bought a new hard drive (Maxtor) to replace the sick Western Digital.
