Hi there, I hope I can help a bit with two questions in the last digest:
> What is implied by the answer above and is explicit in the Apple doc is that if I run a 23 gig external SCSI drive off a PCI SCSI card, the 8 gig limit will not apply (plus I will by pass the slower IDE bus on my Mac G3 Server). > If I am wrong, someone please correct me. You are right about the 8-gig-limit. But ... After I bought a 120 gig Maxtor ( 89,- at a PeeCee-shop) which I use on the on-board IDE-bus I did some file-copy tests (disc to disc and from same disc to same disc) and found out that my internal UW-SCSI IBM 18 gig (on the original Apple/Atto-board) is as fast (or slow for that matter) as the Maxtor on the "slow" IDE-bus. That bus is still a (theoretical) 16 MB/sec IIRC and maybe the 8 MB cache on the Maxtor helps. So mostly you'll see the performance of the disc not the bus. My Seagate Elite 9 gig on the same UW-SCSI-bus is about half as fast (almost twice as slow!) as either the Maxtor or the IBM. I prefer the Maxtor though as it is very quiet and doesn't get hot at all. BTW the external on-board SCSI-bus is VERY slow, you'll probably always see the performance of that bus as the limiting factor. I remember a tale of the former Mr. SERKER of the Quadlist who criticized Apple on the then new beige: he said that they used old-stock SCSI-chips on the beige mobos which were even slower than those of the previous PowerMacs. I don't know about that but otherwise Mr. SERKER made a lot of sense ... Question #2: > I loaded DW into the CD tray and restarted holding down the "C" as above. DW did load and when I tried to move my cursor, nothing. I upended it and noticed, no red light! My $50. brand new Apple Optical Mouse. Tried with the iMac optical mouse, and it too did not respond. Attached my mouse to the iMac, and yes it worked. There are some issues with USB-keyboards and mice connected to a USB-card in the beige. Apple suggests to stick with the ADB. > Big question, why is my USB no longer powering my mouse? What in hades happened? What shall I do? Stick with the ADB-input. Hope this helps ...
