Glenn's tip is indeed a good one, I myself encountered a similar problem a
while ago with a dirrty CD.
BTW I don't want to spoil your excitement about installing Panther because
unless you have downloaded XPostFacto you won't be able to install Panther
on your G3, because Panther is not officially supported on Beige G3s.
