Here's a trick to try - might not cure it but it's always worth a shot.
Pull the power cord out of the back, and pop the PRAM battery out, then leave it over night. Put it all back the next day and see if the problem has remedied.
For some reason PowerMacs have a habit of corrupting the PRAM if you reboot them after a crash or lock-up. It's not something that happens all the time, it's only happened to me once, but I see it a lot, especially on PCI PowerMacs (Beige with CPU slot cards). I until now thought it was restricted to 'Old World' machines but that sounds very like a symptom of it to me. Give it a shot. If it don't work it didn't do any harm.
