i would definitely back it up, run all of my disk repair utilities, and if possible 
run a
good drive testing program overnight and see what turns up.  it could just be that some
critical files have become fragmented on the drive, in which case a backup, format (not
necessary but not bad), and restore from the backups or a disk utility that will do the
disk defraging (if you have one), but back up before defragging.  i assume you don't 
use
it for VM or swap space?  if so that's one thing that can become fragmented.  
diskwarrior
might also help, it could be directory problem.  i'd also manually delete the desktop
files and let the system recreate them on a reboot, they do get corrupted and it's 
another
pair of files that can get fragmented (if you're using os 9 on that drive).

p.s., tech tool does only a basic test of the drive, and it pauses for a long time 
between
loops.  i'd look for a better drive testing application (i use silverlinings test
routines, but i don't know if they work for a firewire drive).
