Because Word Sux. Say it again and say it loud: WORD SUX!!!!
Word does this between versions on PC's. Word does this to itself, fairly often. A goodly chunk of our support time goes to fixing broken Word and Powerpoint docs, particularly right now, when we've got a bunch of *big* grant renewals going on, and dozens of people are working on long, convoluted Word documents on multiple PC's and Macs; every 'Critical Need Detector' in the systems are going off at once...
