An "adhesive", per se, is not used.

A silicone-based heat conducting creme is used.

This product is available at places such as Radio Shack.

Thermalloy, a commercial grade prouct, is what is used where large
quantities are involved, such as in manufacturing.

Silver-based heat conductng cremes are recommended for third-party CPU
upgrades, but this product was not used by Apple in the G3 line.

Before applying new silicone-based creme, remove the old, dried creme
using a toothpick and a Q-tip to remove the larger pieces, and a Q-tip
moistened in Pine-Sol to remove any remaining residue. The Pine-sol,
which is just about the only substance which can remove this
silicone-based product, is itself water soluble, so a cloth moistened
with hot water can remove any remaining Pine-Sol.
