Running a G3/300 with 768 mg of RAM, OSX 10.2.8

Tried 2.6.2 and still it won't mount. Have tried everything I can think 
of. Last time this happened I put a new system on the disk. The hard 
drive is a Maxtor 80 gig. It shows on the desk top but won't mount as a 
boot disk.
