Which os X? Which Mac?

If it's 10.2.x, use System Disk 2.6.2. It will get you back into X easily.
Find it on the Apple site. Startup Disk won't work for X on older machines.

If you are using 10.3.x you may need xpostfacto to convince your machine to go
to X. If it is a Beige, you certainly will need it,or rather, needed it just to
get it going on the machine in the first place.
