(Sorry about the multi list post but as this isn't specific to any Mac other than *a* "new world Mac" I thought I'd be a bit cheeky and seek wherever the answer may lie).
I have completely migrated to new world Macs, but have retained my trusty old and most excellent HP LaserJet 5MP. I don't have the money, nor the inclination to buy a new printer as I feel that this model takes a lot of beating!
Anyway, my wife has finally got fed up of not being able to print at home, having to wait for me to bring printouts home from work I thought I'd see if I could start using it again, so here's the question:
---- How can I best connect my HP LJ5MP with a parallel port and mini (old style) Mac serial/AppleTalk connector ?--
You can try running an old Mac running OS 8 or lower and running Appletalk Bridge software. It doesn't work with OS 9, but this would mean getting another mac just to serve as a print server.
The best way, IMO, is via ethernet and a HP jetdirect external box or internal card.
These things are well-nigh bulletproof (we have dozens of networked printers on line with them, and barring network problems, *never* have problems printing to them via the Macs.) If you have any OS X systems this is pretty much the only way to reliably use the printer, but they work well with OS 9 as well.
They're not cheap new, but they are plentifully available on the used market. The internal models for the 5MP do AppleTalk, most of their external ones do as well.
Also, avoid the multiple printer models; they've never worked well, in our experience.
But the single printer models, like I said are bulletproof.
We have tried USB > Parallel products and have had poor results with them.
There are other parallel > Ethernet adapters out there, but I have no experience with them. After years of trouble-free performance from JetDirects I don't care to try, either. Why mess with success?
