I can't help you much with the inability to shut down, sorry - I have a
350Mhz B&W running 9.2.2 and I keep thinking that maybe I had a similar
problem when I was running 8.6. Are you running any Norton SystemWorks stuff?

With regard to the indexing - I don't think that's a factor. If you stop
the indexing it just inhibits the ability to track down files. I've
stopped the midnight routine many a time (in fact I've had to switch off
indexing for some of the drives because it's neverending). To change the
time (I think 9.1 is the same as 9.2.2) command-F to search, command-L to
configure indexing and you should see a "Schedule" button.
