When the card was reinserted the G3 started up and booted 9.2.1 from the CD and the HD!
The G3 functions fine now, except for one problem. Alert sounds and music from CD sound distorted and the playback volume is very
low. Strangly, the OS 9.2.1 generated test tones played through the same speakers sound adequately loud and undistorted. Any
suggestions on what the problem might be?
I'm no expert on Beige G3s or Personality cards, but the symptoms sound familiar (scuse the pun) to me. If the Personality card has an Amplifier on it it'd be worth checking non of the capacitors have gone south, it is common that electrolytic capacitors (relatively large surface mounted 'Can' type) give up the ghost after a lot of use and spew electrolyte on the board they are mounted on. As one can imagine this causes a lot of mess and is quite conductive. It's commonly known as an achilles heel of certain older Macs, mostly the SE/30, IIci and LCII. It also doesn't do wonders for the timing and output of an audio amplifier!
