Dear List,
I did it and I'm button busting proud and I don't care who knows it! I now have a fully functioning G3 MT (well, almost - but good enough for me). The problem was in the cabling and the jumpers. Once I put the boot drive on the J9 socket cable and jumpered it to master, it booted up beautifully, and with out the ominous "can't open can't open can't open..." lines going across the top of the screen. The screen still flashes a couple of times at start up, but I can live with that.
The CD drive was the problem. I had put it on the J10 socket cable and jumpered it to master. It would only mount on the desktop if the CD was already in the drive at start up. But when I would eject the CD to install another one, the computer would freeze forcing me to do a keyboard restart. And, if a CD wasn't in the drive when the computer started up, and was subsequently installed, it wouldn't mount on the desktop. Bad CD. Bad CD.
So while I am contemplating taking up pottery, I had the thought of switching the jumper on the CD drive to slave (master, slave, who comes up with these ideas any way?) and that might do something.
Upon start up, everything works like a...like a Mac! The OS loads with no problems (OK, some screen blinkies), the CD drive behaves its self, and I am applying for a Pocket Protector 4th Class Certificate. I owe it to you all ladies and gentlemen. My heart felt thanks.
So my next project is getting he internal CD burner (a Yamaha 8-8-24) and the DVD ROM player (a Pioneer Laser Memory) operational. Both are on a SCSI card installed in a PCI slot. What should be my game plan? Find drivers? Find software? I've never used a burner before and I don't know what software I need for either and where to find them. Any suggestions?
