Here's three likely suspects, based on what you've written so far:
A) You may have a bad drive. Does it work OK if put back into a PC or
another Mac?
If so, then it may be...
B) incorrectly jumpered for your Platinum G3 and/or the bus-and-cable
into which it's plugged. How have you set the Master/Slave/Cable-Select
jumper? Into which bus is the drive's data cable plugged? What other
device, if any, is on the same cable, and if there is another device,
where on the cable is that other device located (ie: middle or end?) If
another device shares the cable, how is that device's jumper set? If all
those are correct and OK, then perhaps you've got a...
C) bad ATA cable. Replace with a known good cable, preferably an 80 pin
Ultra ATA cable.
