Word for X became crashy

I have the above installed on a G3 upgraded to G4/500 B&W that is 
running Panther.  Of late, Word has become crash-prone.  Sometimes it 
will just crash.  Sometimes I get the "beach ball" for a few seconds 
before it crashes.  Sometimes I get the "beach ball" and nothing else 
happens; it just keeps spinning (this has happened only once, though).  
Anyone out there have a suggestion as to why and/or as to a fix?
