I'd read somewhere that you had to reformat the drive; but perhaps that is if you want to be able to _boot_ into 9.2? (B/W G4 AGP here so it can do that).

When you format the drive with the OS X Disk Utility there is an option you have to check if you want to boot from OS 9. Yes, it is only required for booting and not for running Classic mode. If the option was selected when formatting was done or the disk was formatted under OS 9 then you can boot OS 9 on it.
