Eudora 6 OS 9.1.
My problem is that regardless of how I load or configure E 6 I cannot get it to retrieve my email. It keeps giving me a Domain Name error message.
My frustration with it is that regardless of how I load it it hijacks all the setting, previous mail, even the alias to Eudora 5.1.
I want to load and run both versions independently
Both versions of Eudora can live happily on the same system IF you are careful.
By default, Eudora stores your data in System Folder:Eudora Folder. Eudora can be pointed to an alternative setup, simply by double-clicking on an "Eudora Settings" file. Eudora expects to find all the files it needs (mailboxes, addressbooks, etc) within the same folder as the "Eudora Settings" file.
What does this mean? It means you can put your data anywhere, then control which set of data Eudora uses by which you click on. You can put an alias to your "favorite" set-up in the System Folder and Eudora will then use that by default.
Eudora 6 modifies the Eudora Settings file in such as way as to corrupt some settings, as far as Eudora 5 is concerned. SOP upgrading to a new version of an application. So... To use both versions of Eudora on the same computer, you must use separate folders and settings files. PITA, IMO.
I have loaded Eudora 6 as First Time and as an Upgrade without finding any way to get it to work. I have input the settings but since it always hijacks all the 5.1 settings I never get just blank boxes to enter in.
Well of course it "hijacks" all the 5.1 settings. You're handing it the same Eudora Settings file that 5.1 used -- and it's updating them.
At this point, since things are obviously scrambled on your system, what I recommend is this:
1. Trash all of Eudora 5 and 6.
2. Rebuild your desktop.
4. Restore the "Eudora Settings" file from the backup you made before you installed Eudora 6 in the first place. It belongs in the folder with your mailboxes etc, by default "System Folder:Eudora Folder"
4a. If you failed to make a backup, whack yourself on the forehead a dozen times, then trash the "Eudora Settings" and "Eudora Settings.bkup" files in that folder.
5. Make a complete backup of the now-fixed "Eudora Folder".
6. Install Eudora 6.1.1.
7. Launch Eudora then update the settings.
Skip 5 and the previous version 6's. 6 works well. Try it, you'll like it. And at this point, it's easier to stand up in the frying pan. :)
If you have any further problems with domain name errors and the like, please let us know. Include the appropriate chunk of "Eudora Log" showing the error.
