Hello, I'm new to the list and pretty much to Macs too, although I have managed to get my hands on increasingly newer models with the aim of learning more over the past couple of years (and made myself far more familiar with them by doing a clean install of OS 8 on an old 6320 a few months back). I have worked my way up from Quads through to my last acquisition which was a PowerMac 7600, which is still short of being able to run OS X which is my goal (and probably when I stand a real chance of getting to know the Mac properly, particularly given that my primary systems are Linux based).
Anyway, the key reason for joining here is that I may have the chance to get my hands on a G3 for a sensible price (to date they've all been scrapped machines that I have saved), but I am concerned that it falls short of being useful for OS X and that I should hold off for a slightly better model. The details I have so far are that it is a beige G3 with: G3 266MHz processor, 512kB cache. 192MB RAM. 6GB IDE Disk. 24x CD. Zip Drive. D15 -> HD15 adaptor on the video output. The System Profiler reports the ROM version as $77D.45F1, so there appears to be a reasonable chance that it is a Rev. 2 motherboard that can handle a slave drive if necessary. From what I've read though, it seems that OS 10.2.8 is the most up to date that would be practical on the machine. My gut feel is that it would be better to try for a blue and white G3 or newer, but since the money goes to charity (not sure how much yet), I may just go for it anyway. Any comments and/or suggestions on economic places (in the UK) to get an OS X capable machine from would be welcome. -- Paul Tansom | Aptanet Ltd. | http://www.aptanet.com/ -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
