Okay, as per Bruce's suggestion, I purchased a LiteOn 52x CDRW drive from OWC. It arrived today, I quickly installed the drive and began testing the unit. First let me say that it is bootable and that is a big plus. Next, using Discribe 5.0 I converted 20 MP3 songs to AIF format for burning to a CD. Once this task was completed I decided to do a test burn to see how fast I could write to the CD. Now I don't for a moment expect my 266 Mhz G3 with 192 Mb of RAM to burn a CD at the max speed, so I thought I would give 32x a try first. No go, made it to track 2 before it errored out. Okay, set it down to 12x this time to see what would happen. This time it made it to track 3 before it errrored out. Okay, so I set it down to the lowest setting that Discribe provides, (4x) and tried once more. Actually made it to track 12 this time before it errored out. Obviously my paultry 192 Mb of RAM is a problem. What doesn't make sense is that I can burn at 10x on my PII-233 Mhz PC with only 128 Mb of RAM no problem. Do Mac's require more RAM to do the same work as a PC?

CD burning speed will depend on the disk (CDR's have a rated max speed), OS, memory, disk space (the temporary image is put on disk, so if your drive is nearly full an fragmented 660 mb image may well crap things out) and your bus speed.

I these particular CDRs at 32x on my P4 all the time with no problems.

If you can put your hard drive on a different bus from the CDRW.

CDRW is on the secondary IDE channel, the same one the original CD-ROM occupied all by itself.

If you're in OS 9 make sure Discribe has enough memory. I've never used it, but when I used Toast I could modify how much RAM was used for a buffer...it may depend on the memory allocation to Discribe, too.

Haven't used OS9 since I downloaded and installed 10.2.6. I like X better but 10.2.8 kept crashing on my system.

Also I plan to upgrade the memory with 3-256 Mb sticks from OWC soon. I assume this will improve the burn speed a bit, at least I hope so! Also how difficult is it to bump up the processor speed to say 300 Mhz? Will this help? Thanks for the info Bruce.
