Okay, this is the Lite On drive from OWC that you sent a link to the list for someone who wanted a good CDRW drive for a beige G3. The model listed in the system profiler is:
LTR-52327S Dev. Rev. QS55
I thought being as the Yamaha CDRW was still showing up in iTunes (even though the drive has been completely removed from this system), I might need to zap the pram which I did several times. When the system came up in OS 9.2.2, I checked there and under Apple Disc burning in the system profiler it is listed as supported. Booted back into OSX and nothing had changed. Still not supported and if you go into iTunes the Yamaha drive is still listed as the burner of record. Very strange behavior.
Very strange indeed, if OS *9* shows it as supported, it should be supported in OS X. Here's the System Profiler record for mine: (note, I am running OS 10.3, but this drive should work in 10.2!) There's a difference in firmware revision, but I don't think OS X looks at that for driver info, I think it looks in the model string.
LITE-ON LTR-52327S:
Manufacturer: LITE-ON Model: LITE-ON LTR-52327S Revision: QS0B Serial Number: Drive Type: CD-RW Disc Burning: Apple Supported Removable Media: Yes Detachable Drive: No Protocol: ATAPI Unit Number: 0 Socket Type: Internal
I would definitely consider an archive and re-install of OS 10, or even a fresh install. Something's not right.
(You have done repair permissions and DFA on the OSX drive, right?)
