I have finally bought a wireless router to establish a small home network; it is a D-Link 714P+. I would like to find out what experiences any of you have had going wireless. I have a B&W G3/350, a B&W upgraded to G4/500, a Beige G3/366, and a lonely PC P4Celeron/1.8.
I'm not too concerned with wireless for the PC. I am interested in understanding how to get my PCI Macs, in particular the B&W's, to connect wirelessly. Is there a specific card I should be looking for? Do I need the Airport software in order to use the PCI card? etc.

My first piece of advice is to get all the 802.11x hardware from one vendor. While all 802.11 equipment SHOULD interoperate with no problems, the management will be much easier with only one brand.

My router is the D-Link 714+ also, which includes a print server, 4 wired ports and I don't remember how many wireless it supports. I have one pc wired to it and 1 with a wireless D-Link pci card. Both of these are running 98se (a 233 and a 400 mhz). With the included software, they are also sharing a printer that is wired to the parallel port on the 714.

My Mac is hooked up through the neatest part of the setup. It is a DWL 810+, which is a wireless to ethernet converter. This allows ANY ethernet enabled device to network through a 802.11 wireless network, even an Mac SE, (if it has an ethernet card). I had to go this route because my beige had no free pci slots and I have read bad reports about 802.11 to usb adapters. When I upgraded to a Digital Audio G4, I kept the 810 and it works fine with it.

I believe it will also work with a printer, but if not, many manufacturers make a wireless adapter for their printers. According to Dlink the 714+ will allow you to print over the network with a Mac, but the printers need to be postscript. Since I have a couple of non postscript inkjets, I have not been able to test this feature.

With the 810, no software is needed. Just connect it to your mac with an ethernet cable and set you mac to connect to the internet via ethernet and you are set to go.

Len
