Jake,
Put the iPod on the Mac and use Disk Utility to format it as an "MS-DOS" volume. Hook it to the PC and run the restore on it. Make sure it has the most recent version of the iPod updater on the PC.
Remember that most PCI firewire cards don't supply bus power so make sure the iPod is fully charged, or better yet, use the AC adapter while doing the restore on the PC.

glen,
as a follow up (and sorry to bother you again) but there was a 2nd email (i
think) that described what to do if the ipod had been erased?
basically whats happened is that a friend (whos a pc user) got given a 2nd
hand touch scroll wheel 10gig ipod, which was a mac version, in return
payment for a web design job. the pc user instantly plugged it into his
laptop using a pcmcia firewire card that didnt provide power to the ipod.
during the reformatting, the battrery ran out...
i've managed to get the ipod resurected on the mac but when i plug it into
the pc, it still recognises it. when i run the update software and select
'restore' it takes about 5 seconds and does the uplug, then plug back in
again thing.
after that, it seems like theres a bug in the software - it crash's the
ipod! and if you can get past the language selection screen, it wont play
anything and each menu takes about 5 min's to move...
so i figured it needs a complete reformat as a pc drive and then a complete
restore using the software? i dont think the machines fried 'cos i can get
it working again on the mac - so it seems hard drive or software related?
whatcha reckon?
