If it is 40-wire, the drive will be recognized, but the data rate will be 
limited to the lower of 33 MB/sec or the drive's maximum rate.

In this machine, all an 80-wire cable does is improve the noise margin of 
the bus as the bus controller is itself limited to 33 MB/sec.

Later Macs supported UATA/66 or UATA/100, for which an 80-wire cable is 
necessary.
