Well, luckily, it turns out this isn't true.

On a Beige you need a rev B or C rom.  I have a rev 1 motherboard so that
doesn't matter.

The key for me was this website:

Turns out I had installed Panther over Jaguar and my old usb 2 drivers were
still there.  The web page explains it all.

Now it works well.  I can move about 100 megs a minute to or from a normal
compact flash card using a $15 reader.  Pretty wonderful.
